Does the label say fruiting body or mycelium?

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the root network, often grown on rice or oats, and some of that grain can end up in the powder.

Does it say extract, and how it was extracted?

An extract has been steeped to pull compounds out. Look for "hot water extracted" or "dual extracted." Plain "mushroom powder" usually means ground, not extracted.

Is each mushroom listed with its own milligram amount?

You want each mushroom named with its own amount. One "proprietary blend" total hides how much of each you actually get.

Do the ingredients list grain, starch, or carriers?

Scan the ingredients for rice, oats, brown rice flour, "myceliated grain," maltodextrin, or other starches.

Is it third-party tested, with a COA on request?

Check the label and the brand’s site. A good brand will send a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent lab when you ask.

Red Flags on a Mushroom Supplement Label

  • "Proprietary blend" with one total and no amount per mushroom.
  • "Mushroom powder" with no mention of "extract."
  • Grain in the ingredients: rice, oats, brown rice flour, or "myceliated grain."
  • A high polysaccharide percentage with no beta-glucan testing behind it.
  • No testing information and no COA available when you ask.
