Mushroom Supplement Myths, Checked.

The things people believe about functional mushrooms, and what the research and the label actually say.

11 myths

Basics “Functional mushrooms are psychedelic.”
Myth

Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Chaga, and the other functional mushrooms don’t cause a high. They’re culinary and medicinal mushrooms, used in food and traditional practice for centuries.

Basics “Mushroom powder and mushroom extract are the same thing.”
Myth

An extract has been steeped to pull compounds out of the mushroom’s tough cell walls. Ground mushroom powder hasn’t, which is also why it leaves grit in your coffee and a true extract dissolves.

Quality “Mycelium and fruiting body are basically the same.”
Myth

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the root-like network, often grown on rice or oats, and some of that grain can end up in the finished powder. A good label tells you which one you’re getting.

Quality “More mushrooms in a blend means more benefit.”
Myth

Divide the total by the number of mushrooms. A 500mg blend of ten mushrooms gives about 50mg of each. A 1,000mg blend of seven gives about 143mg of each.

Quality “A higher polysaccharide percentage means a better product.”
Misleading

“Polysaccharides” can include starch from grain. Beta-glucans are the compounds worth measuring, ideally with a beta-glucan-specific test, not just a polysaccharide number.

Coffee “Mushroom coffee is caffeine-free.”
Myth

Most mushroom coffees have 35 to 50mg of caffeine per serving, about half a brewed cup. The caffeine comes from the coffee, not the mushrooms.

Coffee “Mushroom coffee gives you the same mushrooms as a supplement.”
Misleading

Most mushroom coffee blends contain far less mushroom than research uses, and no human trial has tested a finished mushroom coffee product. It’s a lower-caffeine cup first.

Results “You’ll feel a mushroom supplement in a day or two.”
Myth

The clearest Lion’s Mane results come from people taking it daily for 12 to 16 weeks. Treat it as a daily habit and give it 8 to 12 weeks before you judge it.

Results “There’s one perfect time of day to take mushroom supplements.”
Myth

The best time is the time you’ll stick with. Consistency matters more than the clock.

Safety “Mushroom supplements are fine with any medication.”
It depends

The interactions published sources flag most often involve blood thinners, blood sugar medications, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressants, mostly from lab and animal research. Bring the bottle to your doctor and go through it together.

Safety “If it’s natural, it doesn’t need testing.”
Myth

Mushrooms can take up heavy metals and other contaminants from where they grow. Look for third-party testing and a certificate of analysis (COA) the brand will send when you ask.
