Find Your Mushroom Match: A 60-Second Quiz

The right mushroom supplement depends on two things: what you want support with, and how you like to take it. For focus and brain health, start with Lion's Mane. For immune support, look at Turkey Tail, Shiitake, Maitake, Chaga, and Reishi. For calm evenings, Reishi. For energy and athletic performance, Cordyceps. If you want a little of everything, a blend like Sacred 7 covers all seven. Then pick a format you'll actually use every day: a powder, capsules, or a tincture. Whatever you choose, look for fruiting body extracts, a named extraction method, third-party testing, and the amount of each mushroom on the label. The quiz below matches you in about 60 seconds.

What Are Functional Mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms, also called medicinal mushrooms, are species studied for their bioactive compounds rather than eaten mainly for flavor.

The most-studied compounds are polysaccharides, especially beta-glucans, which interact with the immune system, and triterpenes, the bitter compounds most concentrated in Reishi. Many of these mushrooms also act as antioxidants, and several are often described as adaptogenic, a traditional term for herbs used to help the body handle stress. Most human research is still small, so the honest framing is "studied for," not "proven to."

Guide to eight functional mushrooms and what each is studied for: Lion's Mane for brain health and focus, Reishi for calm and sleep, Cordyceps for energy and athletic performance, Chaga for antioxidants, Turkey Tail, Shiitake, and Maitake for immune support, and Tremella for skin hydration

Which Mushroom Is Best for What?

Each mushroom has its own research focus: Lion's Mane for the brain, Reishi for calm, Cordyceps for energy, and Turkey Tail, Shiitake, Maitake, and Chaga for immune health.

Mushroom Most studied for Key compounds
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) Brain function, memory, cognitive function Hericenones (fruiting body), erinacines (mycelium)
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) Stress relief, sleep, immune support Triterpenes, beta-glucans
Cordyceps mushroom Energy, athletic performance Cordycepin, polysaccharides
Chaga Antioxidant support Polyphenols, melanin, beta-glucans
Turkey Tail Immune health, gut health PSK and PSP polysaccharides
Shiitake Immune support Lentinan (a beta-glucan)
Maitake Immune support D-fraction beta-glucans
Tremella Skin hydration Polysaccharides

Lion's Mane mushroom: In a small Japanese trial, older adults with mild cognitive impairment who took 3 grams of Lion's Mane fruiting body powder a day for 16 weeks scored better on a cognitive test than a placebo group. The scores dropped again after they stopped (Mori et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2009). People often stack it with other nootropics or mushroom coffee for a workday routine.

Cordyceps: Wild Cordyceps sinensis is rare and expensive, so nearly all supplements use either lab-grown mycelium or Cordyceps militaris, a related species that produces a fruiting body. Sacred 7 uses Cordyceps militaris.

Tremella: Tremella is mainly studied for skin, not the brain or immune system. We don't sell it, but our complete guide to Tremella covers it.

Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium: Why Does It Matter?

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. The mycelium is the root-like network, often grown on grain, and it can carry starch from that grain into the final product.

Both parts contain compounds worth studying. Lion's Mane is the classic example: hericenones come from the fruiting body, and erinacines come from the mycelium. The problem is how mycelium is usually grown. When mycelium is grown on rice or oats and the whole thing is ground up, the powder can contain a lot of leftover grain, which lowers the amount of mushroom per scoop. That's why many high-quality mushroom supplements list "fruiting body extracts" or "100% fruiting body" on the label, and why it pays to check.

How Are Mushroom Supplements Extracted?

Mushroom cell walls are made of chitin, which we can't digest well, so the beneficial compounds have to be extracted with hot water, alcohol, or both.

  • Hot water extraction pulls out water-soluble polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. It's the traditional extraction method, and it's how our powders and capsules are made, at 215°F.
  • Dual extraction adds an alcohol step to also pull out alcohol-soluble compounds like triterpenes. Our tinctures soak fruiting bodies in organic cane alcohol for 30 days, then simmer them in hot water, and combine the two. More in Mushroom Tinctures: How to Choose & Use the Best for You.
  • Unextracted mushroom powder is just dried, ground mushroom. It's cheaper, but much of what's inside stays locked behind the chitin.
How to choose a mushroom supplement format: mushroom powder stirs into coffee, tea, or food; capsules are pre-measured and tasteless; tinctures are liquid dual extracts you add by the dropper; gummies are convenient but often low-dose and sugary; mushroom coffee often has small amounts of mushroom

Powder, Capsules, Tinctures, or Gummies: Which Format Is Best?

The best format is the one you'll take every day. Powders are flexible, capsules are simplest, tinctures are fast, and gummies are the easiest to underdose.

  • Mushroom powder: stirs into coffee, tea, smoothies, or food. Easiest to adjust the dose.
  • Capsules: pre-measured, tasteless, and travel well.
  • Tinctures: liquid mushroom extract taken by the dropper, usually dual extracted.
  • Gummies: convenient, but many contain little mushroom extract per gummy plus added sugar. Check the label for milligrams of each mushroom.
  • Mushroom coffee: a blend of coffee and mushroom extract. Easy, but the mushroom dose is often small. Adding a powder to your own coffee gives you more control.

How Do You Choose a High-Quality Mushroom Supplement?

Look for fruiting body extracts, a named extraction method, the milligrams of each mushroom, and third-party testing with certificates of analysis.

Five signs of a high-quality mushroom supplement: the label names fruiting body or mycelium, says extract with a named extraction method, lists milligrams of each mushroom instead of a proprietary blend, is third-party tested with certificates of analysis for heavy metals and microbes, and has no fillers like maltodextrin or rice flour near the top
  1. Fruiting body or mycelium? The label should say which part is used.
  2. Extract or plain powder? Look for "extract" and the extraction method (hot water or dual extraction).
  3. Amounts of each mushroom. Proprietary blends list a total weight but not how much of each mushroom you're getting. Clear labels name each one.
  4. Third-party testing. Mushrooms absorb heavy metals from where they grow, so ask for certificates of analysis (COAs) covering heavy metals and microbes. Our finished-product COAs come from an independent third-party lab.
  5. Made from real mushrooms. Avoid labels that list fillers like maltodextrin or rice flour near the top of the ingredients.

Our label checklist is in How to Choose a Mushroom Supplement Blend.

Do Functional Mushroom Supplements Have Side Effects?

Most people tolerate functional mushroom supplements well. The most common side effects are mild digestive upset, and a few mushrooms can interact with medications.

  • Reishi may add to the effect of blood thinners and blood pressure medications.
  • Chaga is high in oxalates, which matters if you've had kidney stones, and may affect blood sugar and clotting.
  • Several mushrooms, including Maitake, have been studied for effects on blood sugar, so check in if you take diabetes medication.
  • Mushroom allergies are uncommon but possible. Stop if you notice a rash or itching.

One caution: If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, on immune-suppressing medication, or scheduled for surgery, talk with your provider before starting any mushroom supplement. Our guide on how to talk to your doctor about mushroom supplements covers what to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Do Mushroom Supplements Take to Work?

Expect weeks of daily use, not days. In the Lion's Mane trial described above, older adults took 3 grams a day for 16 weeks before their cognitive scores improved, and the scores dropped again after they stopped. Pick a format you'll enjoy every day. See how long mushroom supplements take to work.

Can You Take More Than One Mushroom at a Time?

Yes. Many people combine mushrooms, and a blend keeps it simple. Sacred 7 puts Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps militaris, Chaga, Turkey Tail, Shiitake, and Maitake in one level teaspoon or 3 capsules. A single-mushroom product gives you more of one species if you have one clear goal, like focus.

What If My Mushroom Match Doesn't Come in My Preferred Format?

The quiz points you to the closest fit we make. We don't make a Reishi powder or Reishi capsules, so calm evening matches go to the Reishi tincture, and 2 droppers stir into tea in seconds. We don't make a Cordyceps tincture either, so energy matches go to Sacred 7 Powder, which includes Cordyceps militaris.

Can You Mix Mushroom Powder Into Coffee?

Yes. Mushroom extract powder stirs into coffee, tea, smoothies, or food, and it's the easiest format to adjust. Lion's Mane Powder and Sacred 7 Powder both mix into a morning cup. Adding a measured serving to your own coffee gives you more control than ready-made mushroom coffee, which often holds only a small dose.
